VIJAYAWADA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is going to launch a campaign to educate the public about the various defects in the policies of the ruling Congress with regard to the public distribution system (PDS).

CPI (M) city secretary R. Raghu and State executive member Ch. Babu Rao, addressing a press conference at Sundaraiah Bhavan, the party’s city committee office, on Tuesday said that the Congress had made several promises at the time of elections, but not kept even a single one.

The CPI (M) would conduct a meeting in every one of the 59 municipal divisions to educate the people about the attempts of the ruling party to render the PDS ineffective, they said. The State and Central governments had become mute spectators to the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. The promise to give six kg of rice to all white ration cardholders was still a dream unfulfilled. The pre-election promise that white ration cards would be given to all the families with an annual income of up to Rs. 75,000 also remained unfulfilled, the leaders said. The families that held pink cards but became eligible for white cards because of the revision of upper limit in annual income were also paying Rs. 40 for conversion.
