Depressed over their daughter’s alleged insistence on marrying her boyfriend, a couple committed suicide by hanging at their house at Jagadgiriguttta in Jeedimetla on Saturday night.
Police said K. Rajaram (45) and his wife Vasantha (40) had been requesting their 24-year-old daughter to marry a person within their caste. They had also finalised a marriage proposal and wanted their daughter to accept it.
After their daughter spurned their plea, the couple took the drastic step on Saturday night. The incident came to light on Sunday when they failed to respond to repeated calls from their neighbours, who peeped in through the window to find them hanging from the ceiling fan. A suicide note, purportedly written by the couple, was recovered from the house, in which they stated that they felt humiliated after following their daughter's decision.
Rajaram ran a grocery store. Police have registered a case and handed over the bodies to family members after an autopsy at the Gandhi Hospital.
