Cosmopolitan Club of Srikakulam has lodged a complaint with District Collector N.Srikanth alleging that the police department had ill-treated its members and threatened to file cases against them if they were playing rummy in the club.
According to its members, the club was established in 1949 and rummy had been played since its inception.
All the gazetted and retired officials occasionally play cards and the club management had never allowed playing it as a gambling.
However, the police officials recently asked the members not to play cards on the premises since it would be construed as a gambling.
The officials from various departments opposed moves of police department vehemently and said the department was not supposed to initiate any action since rummy was not a gambling as per the previous rulings of Courts.
“We were shocked with the ill-treatment meted out to us by the police department.
That is why we approached the Collector who is also the ex-officio chairman of the club,” said B.Varahalu, one of the club members and retired District Civil Supplies Officer of Srikakulam.
