The contractors who carried out various works taken up by the VMC, more particularly under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) programme, have decided to launch relay hunger strike from December 10.

Contractors Association president Ankeswara Rao said that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has not cleared the pending bills to the tune of Rs. 20 crore. Though the Chief Engineer convened a meeting with the contractors on Tuesday, there was no positive response from them to the requests made by the contractors. The contractors have asked to pay Rs. 4 crore every month so that the total dues would be cleared in five months. the Association brought the issue to the notice of chief minister, ministers, MP and MLAs. However, no action has been taken. So, the contractors have decided to organise the relay hunger strike until the problem was solved, he said.
