In a first of its kind in the State, a member delivers judgment in Telugu

A few months after the Supreme Court allowed lower courts to pronounce judgments in local languages, a woman member of the Krishna District Consumer Forum-I M. Anuradha pronounced her verdict in Telugu on Tuesday.

The pronouncement in Telugu is the first of its kind in the history of any consumer forum in the State.

The two-member Bench of the forum led by Ms. Anuradha gave the historical verdict in a case in which a petitioner had complained about the failure of a mobile phone worth Rs. 3,800.

The petitioner, T. Nanda Kishore, approached the forum against respondents — Big C, Gudivada, and manufacturer Cellcon Impex, Hyderabad — in 2010.

He complained that the mobile phone which was purchased from the showroom did not function as per the promised standard.

In 2011, the forum, in its first judgment, directed the respondents to provide a new mobile phone to Mr. Nanda Kishore.

However, as the replaced mobile phone also failed to function, the consumer approached the forum again.

Ms. Anuradha, accompanied by in-charge President of the forum B. Srinivas, read out the entire judgment in Telugu.

“The sole aim is to help the petitioner and the respondent understand the proceedings of the case as well as the judgment,” said Ms. Anuradha.

As per the judgment, the two respondents should repay the actual price of the mobile phone and Rs. 1,000 as compensation to the consumer.

“This case will not be the last case in which the judgment is given in Telugu. We are committed to continuing the culture in every possible way,” said Mr. Srinivas.

Ms. Anuradha later told newsmen that she drew inspiration from the verdict delivered in Telugu by Machilipatnam Excise Court judge L. Tejovathi.
