Candidates supported by the party bag 60 per cent of seats

  • Congress maintains lead in all three phases of polls
  • TDP manages to win most major gram panchayats
  • Major loser in the panchayat elections is BJP

    NELLORE: Continuing its winning streak, Congress supported candidates have bagged almost 60 per cent of total gram panchayats in the district.

    The ruling party managed to win 570 out of 941gram panchayats in the three-phase elections, which ended on Sunday. The TDP had to be content with 340 panchayats and the rest were bagged by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (CPI) and others including independents.

    The Congress was able to maintain its lead in all the three phases by bagging the majority of gram panchayats across the district.

    In the first phase, the ruling party won 163 out of 309 panchayats. It bagged 202 out of 274 in the second phase and 205 out of 358 in the last phase of polls.

    Though the TDP failed to win majority of gram panchayats, it was able to win most of the major gram panchayats in the district.

    It bagged Manobolu of Rapur constituency, Naidupet, Kota, Tadakandrika and other prominent major gram panchayats.

    It may be recalled that the Congress had bagged majority of municipalities in the elections held after Assembly elections. Except Gudur, the ruling party had won all other municipalities in the district.

    Later, the Congress swept the cooperative elections. In the recently held local body elections, the party won 31 out 46 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and the coveted Zilla Parishad Chairman post.

    The major loser in all the elections including panchayats is the BJP. The party failed to win significant number of seats despite having cadre across the district.
