Congress MLA of Rajampet Akepati Amarnath Reddy and several persons squatted on a day-long hunger strike on the Kadapa-Chennai National Highway No. 18, before the 108-foot tall imposing statue of saint-lyricist Anamacharya at his birth place, Tallapaka, in Rajampet mandal on Saturday, deploring the apathy of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams in not conducting Annamacharya's death anniversary at the place.
Mr. Reddy lambasted the TTD authorities for not showing interest in developing Tallapaka into a pilgrim-tourist centre, although work on it was launched in former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's rule. Rajampet Agricultural Market Committee chairman Choppa Yella Reddy and over 100 persons squatted in the hunger strike along with the ruling party MLA. Several cultural artistes, spiritual persons and local leaders of other political parties extended their support to the protest.
