ELURU: Congress MLA from Attili Cherukuvada Sriranganadha Raju on Saturday announced his decision to resign from the Assembly. He said he would tender his resignation to Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday.
Mr. Rangaraju was apparently unhappy over the alleged police inaction in a case of attempt to murder and rape. He made a statement to his effect while leading a protest demonstration in front of Penumantra police station where he accused Zilla Parishad Chairman K.V. Nageswara Rao and Tadepallugudem MLA Kottu Satyanarayana of supporting the accused. The duo were out to tarnish his popularity and politically finish him off, he said.
According to information, Srinivasa Reddy, a gunman attached to Mr. Satyanarayana, figured as a prime accused in the case along with 10 others. A woman belonging to Mr. Rangaraju’s group from Penumantra village lodged a complaint with the police on June 18 alleging that the gunman and his associates made an attempt to rape and murder her.
More to join him
ZP Vice-Chairman Ande Satyanarayana, District Cooperative Marketing Society C. Venkata Reddy and the local Agricultural Market Yard Committee Chairperson also offered to quit their posts in solidarity with Mr. Rangaraju.
Mr. Rangaraju, a leading rice miller in the district, had been locked in intra-party rivalry with Mr. Satyanarayana and Mr. Nageswara Rao for quite some time and the recent byelection to the Penumantra gram panchayat proved to be the proverbial last straw for him.
