KARIMNAGAR: The Congress party suffered a severe setback in Karimnagar district in general and Manthani assembly segment in particular with the joining of Congress ZPTC member Putta Madhu and another businessman Karru Nagaiah into the Telugu Desam Party on Wednesday.
The Congress leaders along with their supporters had joined the TDP en masse in the presence of former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and other district leaders in Hyderabad. Incidentally, the ZPTC member P. Madhu is one of the close confidants of Government Whip D. Sridhar Babu in Manthani assembly segment.
Taking advantage of the rift between the Congress leaders of Manthani segment, the TDP district unit leaders had lured the Congress rebel leaders into their fold.
The Congress party, which had won 22 ZPTC seats in 2006 elections, had occupied the ZP chairman post with the support of TRS and CPI support. The TDP, which secured 25 ZPTC seats in the elections, remained silent because of non-availability of support from other parties.
