Meet CEO about ‘mysterious defeat’ of candidates in Uravakonda and Rapthadu
HYDERABAD: Following a representation by large delegation of MLAs led by Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy on the “mysterious defeat” of Congress candidates in Uravakonda and Rapthadu constituencies in Anantapur district, Chief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao here on Wednesday said he would call for reports from the Collector who is the district election authority.
The delegation, which comprised Congress MLAs N. Shailajanath (Singanamala), K. Venkatrami Reddy (Dharmavaram) and G. Madhusudhan Gupta (Guntakal) and Y. Sivarami Reddy and G. Thippeswamy, both MLCs, contended that the Congress candidates in Uravakonda and Rapthadu Y. Visveswara Reddy and P. Prakash Reddy respectively lost “mysteriously” by slender margins.
This was because of the foul-play by election officials themselves, they alleged.
Mr. Raghuveera Reddy told the CEO that Mr. Visveswara Reddy was leading till the 17th round over his nearest rival during counting but he was declared as defeated by margin of 200-odd votes after the 18th round.
Confusion was created deliberately during the last round. Although there were repeated requests for recounting at least the postal ballots, the Returning Officer had gone ahead and declared the results.
The rejection of the plea for recounting of postal ballots was against the rules, he contended.
In the case of Rapthadu constituency, the name and party symbol of the Congress candidate P. Prakash Reddy were pasted on electronic voting machines in a lopsided manner despite pleas to do this in an order.
Several EVMs developed technical snags.
Mr. Reddy expressed apprehension that these snags may have been “engineered”.
