The Congress leadership has begun an exercise to prevent defection of more party MLAs to the YSR Congress Party.
A day after a section of the ruling party MLAs loyal to Kadapa Member of Parliament Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy submitted their resignations, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy convened a series of meetings with his Cabinet colleagues.
The meetings attended by the Ministers, including N. Raghuveera Reddy, Vatti Vasant Kumar and Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy, were aimed at assessing the impact of Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy's ongoing Odarpu Yatra and finalising a strategy to counter his campaign against the ruling party. The Chief Minister was understood to have entrusted the Ministers with the responsibility of counselling the MLAs in their respective districts against supporting Mr. Reddy.
The Ministers, according to sources, were asked to explain the motives behind the resignations by a section of MLAs.
There was, however, no threat to the government and the merger of the Praja Rajyam ensured that the Congress government would continue its full term the Chief Minister was reported to have told the Ministers.
