Candidates backed by the YSR Congress won posts of president in 26 Primary Agricultural Societies, followed by the Congress 24 PACS and TDP 23 PACS in the indirect elections held for 73 of the 80 PACs in Prakasam district on Tuesday.

The indirect elections could not be held in 7 of the 80 PACS, where the elections were held on Monday, for want of quorum, official sources said.

Meanwhile, the ruling ruling Congress which had bagged 63 PACS in the two-phase polls to 153 PACS focused its attention on finalising its candidate for the coveted post of Chairman of the District Cooperative Central Bank slated for February 18.

The names of, among others, Tellam Satyam from Jarugumalli and Edara Mohan from Ongole were doing the rounds, party sources said.

Partymen from Kanigiri and Chirala, where the party had won a good number of PACs, pressed for the posts of DCCB chairman as also chairman of District Cooperative Marketing Societies, they said.

Municipal Administration Minister M Mahidhar Reddy would be holding a meeting with senior party leaders in the district in a couple of days to get ready for the next round of indirect elections, they added.

The TDP, which had been losing in all the by-elections held since the 2009 general election, had a consolation as candidates backed it won a majority of the directors' posts in 47 PACs. The fledgling YSR Congress backed-candidates got a majority only 33 PACs.
