Left parties only alternative now: CPI(M) leaders
The CPI (M) Politburo member and party’s All-India Jatha Southern in-charge S. Ramachandran Pillai has accused the Congress and the BJP of safeguarding the interests of the rich and corporate houses rather than the poor and downtrodden.
Addressing a press conference after paying tributes to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez here on Thursday, Mr. Pillai stated that the Congress-led UPA Government had miserably failed on all fronts, and was not able to solve the problems of the nation, claiming that it was only the CPI(M) and other Left parties which were a political alternative to the Congress and the BJP.
“My party has undertaken an All-India jatha to enlighten the people on the exploitative nature of the government at the Centre and build a strong nationwide agitation against its policies”, he added.
Mr. Pillai said that the jatha was launched against the evils of corruption, price rise and hike in electricity charges and also to demand food security, free education, healthcare and housing for all.
He said that there was a multi-fold increase in corruption in the UPA regime and it did not leave even the area of sports and games.
“In the arms purchase deals, hundreds of crores of rupees were changing hands and the ruling party leaders, in nexus with bureaucrats, were involved in the scandals”, he said.
Another Politburo member M.A. Baby, who was also present, said the sudden demise of Hugo Chavez was a great loss not only to the people of Venezuela, but also to the entire progressive community. “He was a great icon of Latin America and his models and policies need to be adopted by the developing world for the development and welfare of society”, he said.
