The ruling Congress received a shot in the arm with the candidates backed by it winning the post of chairman in 35 of the 68 Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACs) where indirect elections were held on Friday.

The main opposition Telugu Desam Party, which had been drawing a blank in all the byelections held since the 2009 Assembly elections, had reasons to cheer as the candidates supported by it, won the post of chairman in 21 PACs.

The YSR Congress could garner the pivotal post only in 12 PACs in the district.
