Decision in view of improved position of funds and enhancement of “diet charges”

A common menu for breakfast and dinner is in the offing for all the 6,163 welfare hostels run in the State for students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and minorities and differently-abled by their respective departments.

The decision to opt for uniform and nutritious items for these hostel inmates, where over 8.68 students are staying, has been taken by the government in view of the improved position of funds, enhancement of “diet charges” and supply of rice at Re. 1 per kg by the government. The departments have no connection with lunch because it is being served to the inmates of educational institutions under the mid-day meal scheme.

Officials of these departments have been asked by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to prepare a model menu in consultation with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) . J. Raymond Peter, Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, said scope existed now to offer quality breakfast and dinner in these hostels with leafy vegetables and “egg briyani” once a week. A cup of milk will be provided to the inmates in the morning, nutritious snacks at 4 p.m. and a cup of curd as part of the dinner. The decision was taken by the Chief Minister while considering the proposals made by officials at a meeting here on Thursday.
