Troupes from all over the State will participate

Emphasis is on inviting troupes from small towns for this annual event

VIJAYAWADA: The three-day competition of comedy playlets, organised every year by Sumadhura Kala Niketan, will begin on Friday at Tummalapallivari Kshetrayya Kalakshetram, featuring several rib-tickling playlets by troupes coming from different parts of the State.

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, organisation president A.V. Subba Raju said this year more emphasis was placed on encouraging associations and organisations hailing from small towns such as Pathapadu, Viisannnapeta, Mylavaram and Tiruvuru.

“The aim of Sumadhura Kala Niketan is to provide platform to talented artistes. Our screening committee, on the basis of merit, has selected playlets from these small towns,” he said.

On the inaugural day of the three-day event, ‘Idi Comedy Kaadu’ (Baba Cultural Arts, Vijayawada) at 6 p.m., ‘Triputa Thaalam’ (Vijayawada Samsrutika Samakhya, Vijayawada) at 8 p.m. and ‘Sentiment Sundaram’ (Vallam Narasimha Rao Memorial, Tiruvuru) at 9.30 p.m. would be staged. The event would be formally inaugurated at 7 p.m. in the presence of Municipal Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna, actor-couple Ravi Kondal Rao and Radha Kumari and others. Actor and theatre teacher D.S. Dikshit and theatre artiste K. Vijayalakshmi would be felicitated.

There would be a talent search programme at 10 a.m. on Saturday where competitions in light music, patriotic songs, folk music, mono action and skits would be organised for young artistes. The playlets for the day include ‘Gaarela Gola Boorela Mela’ (Stage Crafts, Vijayawada) at 5.30 p.m., ‘Mee Intlo Puli Undaa’ (Malladi Creations, Hyderabad) at 6.45 p.m., ‘Navvakandi’ (Kalaniketan, Veerannapalem) at 8.45 p.m. and ‘Puli Raja’ (Abhyudaya, Patapadu) at 10 p.m.

Special programme

On Sunday, there would be a special programme, a motley mix of various fun-filled performances, titled ‘Naavandi…Naavandi’ from 10 a.m. ‘Lagabus Latchanna’ (Kashi Vishwanath Creations, Visakhapatnam) at 5.45 p.m., ‘Telugu Dongalu’ (Viswasanthi Cultural Association, Hyderabad) at 7 p.m. and ‘Vaikunthapali’ (R.K. Creations, Hyderabad) at 8 p.m. would be the playlets for the day.

“Film director Relangi Narasimha Rao will be awarded the late Jandhyala memorial award on the concluding day,” Mr. Subba Raju said.

He said comedy playlets’ competitions began way back in 1995 and since then a wide range of playlets had been staged for the people of Vijayawada who had a penchant for humour.

“Apart from out annual extravaganza, we also stage monthly programmes in music dance and dramas. We floated Sumadhura Vidya Prarishad, through which we are offering educational scholarships to meritorious students of economically backward artistes. We are also providing Rs. 250 as monthly pension to 30 economically backward artistes,” he explained.

Sumadhura Parishad chairman N. Murali Krishna, organising secretary Mohan Ram Prasad, Sumadhura Kala Niketan organising secretary P. Suryanarayana Murthy and others were present.
