Additional General Manager of NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Plant V. Ganesh on Thursday said coal was the only viable option for capacity addition in the power sector and called for a reliable supply mechanism.

Speaking at a meeting conducted by the EEE Department of GITAM University as part of Institution of Engineers student chapter anniversary, he said there was an urgent need to improve domestic coal production to meet 80 per cent requirement.

He pointed out that due to shortage of domestic coal during the year 2010-11 about 25 million tonne of coal was imported for the power sector in the country entailing a financial burden mainly on Discoms.

“We need to have long-term fuel supply agreements (FSA) with 90 per cent commitment level,” he said.
