The State government will launch yet another populist scheme, ‘Amma Hastham’ here on Thursday, on the occasion of Ugadi, to give nine essential commodities to white cardholders through the public distribution system.

The nine commodities - one kg of red gram, palmolein oil, whole meal flour, wheat, iodized salt, half kg sugar, tamarind, quarter kg chilli powder and 100 gm turmeric powder - will be provided to 2.25 crore white cardholders in one package for just Rs.185 every month. The white cardholders were already being given quality rice, ‘Mana Biyyam’ procured locally in the districts from January.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy will launch the scheme which is aimed at benefiting 7.5 crore people, according to a release.

While the total cost of the items is Rs.292, the government will provide them for Rs.185, benefiting each cardholder by Rs.105 per month and it is estimated to cost the State exchequer Rs. 650 crore a year.
