The Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) termed the arrest of Majlis legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi as an ‘unjust and unfair’ act. In a statement to the media, Lateef Mohammed Khan, General Secretary, CLMC described the arrest as a ‘politically motivated act’ and also ‘inhuman’ considering that the legislator was on medical treatment abroad, and had returned to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies.

It is alleged that the government, on the pretext of medical check-up, took the leader to Gandhi Medical Hospital and arrested him based on ‘fabricated medical reports’ and in violation of Supreme Court guidelines laid down in connection with arrest, detention and interrogation of a person. Mr. Khan claimed that Akbar’s speech was based on the statement of Ram Jethmalani.
