The marriage of a 13-year-old girl with her brother-in-law in Chidruppa village in Sangareddy mandal, scheduled on Wednesday forenoon, was stopped at the last moment.
A classmate of the girl called Childline No. 1098 at 10.10 a.m. and informed the authorities about the proposed marriage. By 11.20 a.m., officials of various departments and an NGO reached the marriage function hall and stopped the marriage in the nick of time.
The girl is studying Class VIII in Zilla Parishad High School in Narsapur mandal. Her classmates also turned up to attend the marriage.
“Our officials reached the spot along with Hatnoora Sub-Inspector Bharat Kumar just before the ceremony wedding started and stopped it. Later, we held a counselling session for the family members of the girl and boy and warned them that they would land in jail if the marriage was performed,” R. Ratnam, District Child Protection Officer, told The Hindu .
M.S. Chandra, Director of Childline, said that they had received the call just one-and-a-half hour before the marriage. “The The girl is interested in continuing education and we will pursue this matter,” said Mr. Chandra.
