Besides raising awareness on vehicular pollution by creating a free-zone on the Beach Road in the morning from November 1, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) wants to set an example by not using vehicles once a week.

Come Monday, its officials and employees, including the Commissioner, are expected to use public transport, or bicycles or walk down to the office neither using the vehicles provided by the corporation nor their own cars or two-wheelers.

Monday being the day of grievances, all employees will be available in the office and hence can afford not to use vehicles. For field visits on the day too, they are advised to use bicycles.

At a meeting on Thursday, Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu made it clear to employees to take up the initiative voluntarily but not for fear of somebody watching them. The entire exercise is aimed at reducing vehicular pollution saving precious fuel and at the same time helping in healthy living by physical exercise.
