VIJAYAWADA: The city witnessed an increase in the crime rate during 2009 compared to the year 2008. As many as 4,986 cases were reported in 2009 as against 4,730 in 2008. There is a considerable increase in number of kidnaps as the current year recorded 58 kidnappings as against last year’s 37 cases.
However, there is a decline in number of thefts. While 1,155 theft cases including, cattle, pickpocket, cycle theft, wire thefts and so on were reported in 2008, it reduced to 1,110 in current year. Likewise, there is a decline in number of robbery and dacoity cases. While 24 robbery cases were reported in 2008, it came down to 22 in 2009. No dacoity cases were reported this year, while it was just one in the previous year.
Though the number of night house-breaking reduced to 132 from 152 in 2008, the day house-breaks increased to 38 from previous year’s 35. The property lost stood at Rs. 3.62 crores this year, while it was Rs. 3.66 crores last year. Though there is an improvement in recovery rate, there is a decline in percentage of detection. While the percentage of recovery is 58.11 in 2008, it rose to 60.66 percent in 2009. The police could recover Rs. 2.20 crores this year as against Rs.2.12 crores during 2008.
