The country's 63{+r}{+d}Republic Day was celebrated across the city with a palpable spirit of patriotism and festive fervour.

While the national tri-colour was sported with pride by students in several schools and colleges, numerous corporate organisations too revelled in the celebration.

A unique drill display by differently-abled children of the Thakur Hari Prasad Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for the Mentally Handicapped marked the day, with a call for policy development to mainstream the physically challenged.

Arts College

On the other hand, the historic Arts College building of the Osmania University witnessed the hoisting of the national flag by S. Satyanarayana, Vice-Chancellor of the University, who received the ‘Guard of Honour' by the police and security staff earlier in the day. The tri-colour also flew high at the constituent colleges of the university, administrative divisions, hostels, faculty club and NGOs home.

‘Republic Ride'

Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Lakshmaiah flagged off the ‘Republic Ride-2012', a philanthropic corporate cycling event by Atlanta Foundation from Gachibowli Stadium. More than 4,000 cyclists from over 50 multi-national companies participated in the ride.

On the occasion, the Minister said the State government will start separate cycling tracks in select places such as Kondapur and Madhapur to ensure safety of bicyclists.

Hyderabad Collectorate

At the Hyderabad District Collectorate, Collector Natarajan Gulzar hoisted the national flag, and urged the employees to reach the targets by working hard. He distributed merit certificates to the employees who excelled, and tricycles to the 11 physically challenged persons.

Plea to APSRTC staff

The Executive Director of the APSRTC Greater Hyderabad and Hyderabad zones A. Koteswara Rao through his Republic Day speech, called for commitment, dedication and unity among employees for the corporation to make profits.

Speaking after hoisting the tricolour here on Thursday, he said people have entrusted a great responsibility to the RTC as the principal mode of transport, and it is the duty of the staff to live up to their expectations by running buses to suit their needs and tastes.

Cancer hospital

In another event, Chairman of the Basava Tarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, hoisted the flag in the hospital premises, and promised more camps to identify cancer in the coming days.

SCR Mazdoor Union

President of South Central Railway Mazdoor Union, V.P.R. Pillai, and general secretary Ch. Sankara Rao participated in Republic Day fete in the union's central office.
