‘Various developmental programmes being taken up on priority'
Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari on Saturday said Visakhapatnam had the potential to become a major tourist hub.
After inaugurating modern lighting and central median between Ropeway Junction and Jodugulapalem, stretching over 0.9 km, she said various initiatives were being taken to showcase the city as tourist spot.
She also laid the stone for lighting and central median between Jodugulapalem and Sitakonda.
Both the roads are part of the beach road beautification undertaken by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority.
The lighting projects between Ropeway Junction and Jodugulapalem and from there to Sitakonda cost Rs.62 lakhs.
Ms. Purandeswari told reporters who met her that after Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam was getting priority in the allocation of funds.
Various developmental schemes along with tourism promotion were being taken up on top priority in the city.
Asked to comment on violation of Coastal Regulation Zone notification, she said there were some cases involving conversion from CRZ categories. Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest was expected to hold a meeting after Parliament session to take stock of the situation. VUDA Vice-Chairman G. Sreedhar said the lighting and central median work would increase the volume of tourists to the beach road, prevent road accidents and offer more safety.
