City fully capable of hosting mega events: Danam

The successful conduct of the XI Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity has showed that the city was fully equipped to host biggest of the international events, Labour Minister Danam Nagender said here on Thursday.

Speaking after giving away Aam Aadmi Awards for protection of biodiversity and prizes to the winners of environment quiz, at a side event at CoP 11 organised by Sukuki Exnora, the Minister said about 14,000 delegates have registered from 193 countries for the mega event and there was no major hiccup in hosting it.

The Aam Aadmi award winners were Subash Chandra Reddy, Swamy Bhagwandas, Gita Dendukuri and Venkata Raju, all of whom played a major role in saving trees and animals.

The Minister also released a highly informative biodiversity map of Hyderabad, “Theme 2012”.

Children from different schools participated in the programme organised during lunch break at the hall where international delegates were involved in serious negotiations on ways of reducing global biodiversity losses.

Maj. Shiva Kiran of Sukuki Exnore spoke.

Chantal Robichaud of the CBD secretariat, W. G. Prasanna Kumar, director of AP unit of National Green Corps, attended while foreign delegates had fun participating in a short quiz based on the city’s biodiversity map and then joining in a dance with schoolchildren.

The Minister later interacted with Braulio Ferriera de Souza Dias, executive secretary of the CBD.
