After the Qutb Minar in New Delhi, the Union Tourism Ministry has taken up a programme to spruce up the Taj Mahal, keep the environs clean and ensure basic facilities of international standards, to attract tourists. Inaugurating ‘Project Clean India Campaign’ (CIC) at the Taj Mahal on Wednesday, Union Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi said clean environs would motivate people to visit destinations. In this case, Taj Mahal was the second heritage site to be covered under the project, after Qutb Minar, on which works were taken up in June last.
Project CIC envisages improving services and providing hygienic environment in and around popular tourist destinations and in Phase One, 36 heritage sites across India were identified for improvement, said the Union Minister. Following his request, the ONGC had agreed to adopt the Taj Mahal complex and upkeep the environs, he said.
