TIRUPATI: Chintha Mohan, Tirupati Member of Parliament, has in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposed that suitable amendments be made to the Motor Vehicles Act so as to ensure timely and on-the-spot payment of compensation by insurance companies to the victims of road accidents.

In his letter, Mr. Mohan pointed out that there is inordinate delay in the payment of compensation to the victims or their families due to the legal and bureaucratic hurdles involved in the process. He said that on most occasions it is the lawyers and the middlemen who take away bulk of the compensation with the real victim either getting nothing or a paltry sum that too after a long-drawn legal process.

He suggested an on-the-spot compensation of Rs. 8 - Rs.10 lakh to the affected families in case of death of the victim and Rs. 4 to 5 lakh to the victims in case of injuries.
