VIJAYAWADA: Involvement of schoolchildren in a protest rally jointly taken out by the city units of the SFI, the AISF and the PDSU led to a face-off between the student leaders and the police.

The student leaders led a procession from the Gandhiji Municipal High School, involving students of that school, and arrived at the office of the Municipal Corporation. The police deployed on bandobust took strong exception to participation of the children in the rally. Arguing that children must be spared of such inconvenience, the police arrested Sivaramakrishna, Ravichandra and Kadar Basha, city secretaries of SFI, PDSU and AISF respectively. The activists resisted their arrests resulting in a melee at the venue. The student unions were protesting against GO No. 76 envisaging introduction of CBSC syllabus in State-run schools.
