Timely intervention by school teachers and civil society leaders prevented a child marriage at Mortha under Undrajavaram, which is considered a prosperous and advanced mandal.

According to information, the marriage of the girl, a Class IX student of the local Zilla Parishad High School, was scheduled to be held at Dammennu, the groom’s place in the same mandal, on Thursday night. Relatives from both sides had gathered.

At this juncture, a complaint was registered on a toll-free number at the head office of the Rajiv Vidya Mission seeking intervention to stall the marriage. Officials from the Revenue and the Women and Child Welfare Department and a team of teachers from the school swung into action and saved the girl following instructions from the RVM authorities in Hyderabad.

Local MLA Burugupalli Sesha Rao of the TDP, who was among the invitees, counselled the girl’s parents against going ahead with the marriage.
