VIJAYAWADA: A two-day State open chess tournament jointly organised by the Krishna District Chess Association and Nandamuri Balakrishna Charitable Trust will be held here on June 9 and 10 at the Film Chamber Hall.
Prize money of Rs. 30,000 is at stake in the tournament.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, KDCA secretary Srihari said top players like J. Malleswara Rao and D. Lakshmana Rao along with several up and coming players from all over the State would be seen in action in the tournament, which would be held in eight rounds.
“As many as 25 prizes will be distributed on the valedictory day. For second and third places, Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000 will be given away,” he said.
Mr. Srihari said another State open chess tournament would be conducted at Nuzvid in July.
“The State under-15 selection tournament for boys and girls is scheduled to be held at Kaikaluru on June 28 and 29 to pick the State team for the forthcoming nationals,” he disclosed.
Mr. Srihari said efforts were on to stage junior nationals in Vijayawada and the green signal was given to the district association by the Andhra Pradesh Chess Association. “We’re keen to host it, as a national tournament can inspire youngsters.”, he said.
