Telugu Desam Party alleges irregularities in selection of beneficiaries
Congress, TDP coroporators trade charges
Telugu Desam corporators stage sit-in
GUNTUR: A wordy duel between Congress and Telugu Desam Party corporators marred the Indiramma Sambaralu programme of the Guntur-II constituency held at the Municipal High School at Sthambalagaruvu on Monday.
The corporators, led by TDP floor leader Yaganti Durga Rao, staged a sit-in protest on the road blocking the traffic on the Pattabhipuram-Gujjangundla road. The TDP corporators were protesting against alleged discrepancies in selection of beneficiaries in the housing programme phase-III.
Tense moments prevailed when the protesting TDP corporators barged into the meeting venue and raised slogans against the government. Even as Municipal Commissioner Siddharth Jain began to address the gathering, the corporators tried to disrupt the meeting, raising slogans.
With the Congress corporators too trying to counter them, police intervened and brought the situation under the control. Later, Guntur-2 MLA T. Venkat Rao distributed the possession certificates and the widow pension forms to the beneficiaries.
The Commissioner said under the Indiramma housing programme, 1,764 houses were sanctioned under phase III in the Guntur-II Assembly constituency, out of which 787 houses were sanctioned under category III. He said that the beneficiaries have been selected after some stringent verification and identification processes.
Mr. Venkat Rao lambasted the TDP corporators for trying to create a ruckus at the programme and warned that the people would teach the party a befitting lesson in the next general election. He said that though the officials took some time in verifying the real beneficiaries, the Indiramma housing programme would cover all the eligible poor people.
Seeking support of the people in meeting targets, he appealed to the gathering to repose faith in the State Government. TTD Dharmika Mandali Guntur president Tadisetty Murali Mohan and corporators were present.
Interestingly, Mayor Rayapati Mohana Sai Krishna, Deputy Mayor Sk. Ghouse stayed away from the programme. The Mayor left for Hyderabad on Monday morning.
