Parties allege kickbacks in purchase of tractors

  • All councillors, irrespective of parties, stage walkout
  • Councillors allege involvement of Chairman, officials

ADILABAD: Irate councillors of Adilabad Municipality on Wednesday damaged furniture in the council meeting hall following arguments with Chairman Digambar Rao Patil over alleged kickbacks in purchase of tractors. All the councillors, irrespective of the parties to which they belong, staged a walkout over the issue.

As soon as the special meeting for approval of draft budget started in the morning, councillors, including those of the Congress, raised the question of kickbacks in the tractor deal.

Circulating copies of `proper' quotation for the same type of tractor, they alleged that the Chairman and officials had cornered Rs. 50,000 on each of the four tractors purchased by the municipality.

Mr. Patil denied the allegation and wanted to go ahead with the agenda as regards approval of draft budget for the Municipality.

However, all the 38 councillors walked out of the meeting in protest against the attitude of the Chairman.

They came back to the meeting hall after some time when they came to know that the budget proposals have been deemed to be approved by the Council. Enraged councillors went on to damage furniture.
