The officials of the Chittoor Municipal Corporation appraised the Central drought team of the prevailing water crisis in the corporation, seeking liberal grants to overcome it.
The civic officials met the drought team which visited several parts of Madanapalle division a few days ago.
A file with information on the denizens of Chittoor facing the water problem was submitted to the team. At present, the NTR reservoir, and several tanks under the corporation limits and surroundings dried up, forcing the denizens to completely depend on groundwater sources.
Of the 50 divisions, the water supply is carried through 289 borewells and as many as 19 hand pumps. As many as 756 trips of water supply is maintained through 80 tankers from the filling points. The Central team was informed that in view of the severity of the water problem due to summer, the supply is enhanced through 101 additional trips.
The civic authorities also brought to the notice of the Central team the feasibility of solving the water crisis in Chittoor through Kandaleru reservoir, as it remains the only option towards a permanent solution.
