VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) plans to host a national-level theatre festival in the city as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the civic body commencing on June 12.
Addressing a review meeting with senior artistes and representatives of cultural organisations in the city on Saturday, VMC Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar said that the proposed festival would be the first-of-its-kind in the country, as no civic body conducted such an event so far.
Reacting to several proposals put forward by the artistes, Mr. Gulzar welcomed the idea of constructing an open air theatre-cum-shopping area in the city, on the lines of Shilparamam in Hyderabad.
"Since the family members of Lakkireddi Hanimi Reddy have come forward to donate Rs. 5 crores for construction of an auditorium, we can set up an arts and crafts village," he said. Mayor Tadi Sakuntala, former Mayor Jandhyala Sankar and theatre artiste Mikkilineni Radhakrishna Murthy and Governor of the Rotary International District-3020 M.C. Das also spoke.
