The city unit of CPI(M) led by its secretary B. Ganga Rao organised a dharna at the GVMC office on Wednesday opposing the exercise on revising the City Development Plan and described it as a platform for the World Bank-dictated reforms under JNNURM.

Mr. Ganga Rao alleged that privatising water supply, sanitation, sewerage, BRTS etc and adopting public private partnership in all sectors, including slum development, was the only aim of the revised CDP. Levying charges for all civic services and increasing taxes also formed a key part of the revision, he said.

He criticised the GVMC for its poor performance on delivering on the first CDP in implementing the JNNURM. Of the projects estimated to cost Rs.14,987 crore, projects worth only Rs.1,885 crore were taken up and of them nine projects costing Rs.984 still remained to be completed and none was sure when they would be completed.

Mr. Ganga Rao alleged that instead of the proposed 50,000 houses only 15,320 were taken up and of them 1,820 still remained to be started and 3,000 were incomplete. As many as 1,570 houses were allotted to those displaced by the Gangavaram port against norms, he said.
