A three-member CBI team headed by its Joint Director V. V. Lakshminarayana today conducted searches in the offices of Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited (KPCL) here on Thursday to verify the quantity of iron ore exported from there by Obulapuram Mining Company.

The CBI officials, who are inquiring into the alleged illegal mining by OMC, which is owned by former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, went through the records of Krishnapatnam Port as well as the Customs Office.

They were trying to find out whether iron ore was exported even after the government imposed a ban on its export, besides checking whether the stocks delivered by the OMC tallied with the iron ore exported from the port and the procedure followed by the mining company in shifting the material.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the port, Mr. Lakshminarayana said about 14.43 lakh metric tones of iron ore belonging to Obulapuram Mining Company has been exported to various countries from Krishnapatnam Port between 2006 and 2009. “However, it will take some time to verify the documents,” said the Joint Director. The CBI team conducted day-long searches in the port as well as in the Customs office and the verification continued till night.
