The Legal Metrology Department officials on Friday conducted raids at 70 jewellery shops in twin cities and booked cases against 58 shopkeepers for selling gold in violation of norms.

The raids were conducted at Basheerbagh, Himayathnagar, Abids, Somajiguda, Punjagutta and General Bazaar in Secunderabad.

The decision to conduct raids at gold jewellery shops was taken during a review meeting convened by the Controller, Legal Metrology, V. K. Singh here on Thursday.

During the raids, officials found that some shopkeepers were not mentioning the purity of the gold in bills while others failed to get annual certificates of the weighing machines from the department.

In some cases, traders were not keeping standard weights for testing the weighing machine, said Regional Deputy Controller B. Ramkumar.

He said cases were booked against errant shopkeepers under Section 30 of the Legal Metrology Act and further investigations were on.
