CPI State Secretary K. Narayana has said that DGP V. Dinesh Reddy had filed cases against S. Nagesh Kumar, Resident Editor (AP), The Hindu, for fearlessly publishing a news report about the DGP’s visit to a godman in the Old City in Hyderabad.

Speaking to the media here on Saturday, the CPI State Secretary said that following his condemnation of the DGP for filing cases against Mr. Nagesh Kumar, the DGP spoke to him over phone.

Mr. Narayana said he told the DGP that the latter could have taken the issue with the Press Council of India, if there was anything objectionable in the news report, adding that filing of cases against Mr. Nagesh Kumar was unfair.

"The CPI always strongly supports the freedom of speech and expression,” he said and accused the Khammam district police of acting in similar manner to harass local CPI leaders. He further said that they would organise protests to highlight the rude behaviour of the police, if the latter continued to harass the CPI cadre.

Former Rajya Sabha member Aziz Pasha, senior party leader Palla Venkat Reddy and district secretary M. Adi Reddy were also present.
