VISAKHAPATNAM: Primary and secondary care is important in the case of heart diseases to save a patient and the doctors at must have good knowledge about cardiac problems, be able to diagnose and provide the required treatment immediately.

Keeping this in view the Vizag Heart Club is conducting the Cardio Update - 2008 here on Saturday and Sunday to provide the doctors with information about the latest techniques and advances in the field, a consultant cardiologist and organising secretary M. Bhaskara Rao said at a press conference here on Friday.

Cardiac problems were less and infections and maternal mortalities were high in the past in India but at present the former was high and the preventive measures were not keeping pace with the problem, he said.

In the US and other developed countries the cardiac diseases were more prevalent in the past but the problem they would cause if not checked was understood and measures were put in place long time ago. But the same reaction to the problem was not noticed in India and other developing countries.

The risk factors like diabetes, hyper tension, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, etc. were growing and the change in habits like lack of exercise, preference to junk food, and increasing stress were leading to more cases of heart diseases, Dr. Bhaskara Rao said.

The Cardio Update will be attended by some noted cardiologists like B. Somaraju, K.M. Cherian, S.C. Manchanda and others.

They would deliver lectures on latest important techniques and development in cardiology care. About 300 delegates from coastal districts and neighbouring districts in Orissa are expected to participate.
