ANANTAPUR: Overshadowed by the untimely death of the former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, campaigning for the Anantapur Local Bodies’ Constituency seat in the AP Legislative Council byelection is gaining momentum slowly. The electioneering for the by-poll scheduled on September 15 will conclude on September 13.

Along with the MLC bypoll, byelections are also being held for Kalyanadurg ZPTC seat and two municipal councillor seats in Kadiri and Hindupur in the district. The ruling Congress is taking all the byelections prestigiously, while the opposition TDP is trying to safeguard its mass support in the wake of sympathy created for the Congress.

The MLC by-poll was necessitated with resignation to his seat by P. Raghunatha Reddy of TDP, who contested and won the assembly election from Puttaparthi earlier this year. The present scenario coupled with the sympathy wave created for the ruling party making the fight difficult for TDP, which already has lesser number strength among ZPTCs, MPTCs, Corporators and Councillors -- the electorate for the election.

Vacancy in Kadiri municipal council was caused by resignation of a TDP member, while in Hindupur a Congress member’s death caused the bypoll.
