The campaign for the second and final phase of elections to the remaining 439 panchayats and 3,526 wards in the 19 mandals in Vizianagaram Revenue division ended on Thursday. As many as 1040 candidates for sarpanchs and 7,683 candidates for ward members are in the fray. In this division, 73 panchayats and 1,338 wards were declared unanimous on July 17, after withdrawal of nominations. There are 7,85,106 voters (men – 3,89,338 and women---3,95,768) in the division.

The district administration has made all arrangements to conduct polling in a peaceful atmosphere. It identified 37 panchayats as hypersensitive and 97 as sensitive. Superintendent of Police Karthikeya said that 2,500 police personnel, including special striking forces and mobile teams, were drafted for poll duty.

Collector Kantilal Dande on Thursday appointed special officers for major panchayats also.

He warned officials drafted for polling of severe action if they abstained from duties as per People’s Representative Act.
