Breast awareness holds the key to shed inhibitions and facilitate prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of breast disorders including breast cancer, said Dr Sumita Shankar, a Hyderabad-based noted plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Speaking to media persons after launching a State-level breast awareness programme, an initiative of Hyderabad-based Asclepius Medical Services Private Limited, here on Saturday, Dr Sumita Shankar, the founder of the company, said the programme was intended to promote better understanding of issues concerning breast health among women.

The awareness programme will feature interactive sessions and free consultation camps in all districts in the State. The initiative was launched coinciding with the celebration of the International Women’s Day recently, she said adding that the programme will continue until March 8 next year. It focuses on educating women on issues ranging from common breast problems to various disorders including breast cancer. The women will be apprised of different breast deformities such as asymmetrical breasts, sagging breasts and hypermastia besides the treatment options available. The interactive sessions will help women overcome misconceptions and social stigma associated with breast disorders. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer only next to cervical cancer among women, she pointed out saying all the breast lumps are not cancers. Early diagnosis is a basic prerequisite to check breast cancer, she remarked. Dr Sumita said the needy women would be counselled to overcome health, social and marital problems associated with breast deformities and disorders during the awareness campaign. She addressed a breast awareness meet held at Swarna Bharathi Institute of Science & Technology (SBIT) in the town later in the day. A free consultation camp will be organised as part of the breast awareness programme at Medinova Diagnostic Centre near bus stand from 10 am to 5 pm here on March 31 (Sunday).
