HYDERABAD: In a new twist to the on-going campaign to anoint Kadapa MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy as the Chief Minister, second rung Congress leaders in Karimnagar refused to take up party’s membership drive till their demand was fulfilled.

For the second successive day, APCC president D. Srinivas faced embarrassment when over-enthusiastic party cadres barged into the DCC offices and disrupted the teleconference to review membership drive. Today, it was the turn of Youth Congress workers in Karimnagar and Prakasam to disrupt it.

“People’s demand”

Karimnagar District Youth Congress leaders refused to participate in the membership drive till Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy was made the Chief Minister. “We are unable to go to the people and participate in the enrolment drive as they are demanding that Jagan be made the Chief Minister,” one YC leader claimed.

In Medak district too, second rung Congress leaders issued a similar ultimatum. While at the teleconference, senior party leaders assured the PCC chief that they would actively participate in the membership drive, in private many of them admitted that it was becoming difficult for them to go to the people.

Some leaders raised slogans in favour of Jagan and denounced remarks by CWC member K.Keshava Rao.
