Selling of government lands opposed

VIJAYAWADA: Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerrannaidu on Tuesday asserted that the byelections in the State would be a referendum on the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government and its functioning in the past four years.

Mr. Naidu took objection to PCC president D. Srinivas’s statement that it was not a referendum on the government. “By saying so, Mr. Srinivas accepted that the Congress party will be defeated in the byelections. There is no reason why people should vote for such a party in 2009 elections,” he said.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Yerrannaidu alleged that the Congress leadership was steeped in corruption and made illegal wealth in the name of developmental and welfare programmes.

He deplored that the so-called irrigation projects turned into a goldmine for Congressmen.

He said that Dr. Reddy did nothing for the people except passing undue benefits to his relatives and followers.

Deploring the selling away of government lands and property, Mr. Yerrannaidu said: “No other Chief Minister in the past has done like this. In my long political career, I have seen so many chief ministers. Nobody has behaved like this.”

The TDPP leader reiterated their party’s commitment to the protection of government property, which was why the TDP cadres were opposing auction of lands anywhere in the State.

Mr. Naidu accused the Centre of passing the buck on the States when it came to controlling prices of essential commodities.

He demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh step aside owning moral responsibility for many failures of his government in addition to unprecedented price rise.
