ONGOLE: In a novel protest, Kula Vyathireka Porata Samithi (KVPS) activists staged dharna near Tahsildar office here today demanding burial grounds for the dead of the dalits in all villages in the district.
Earlier, they took out a procession from Dr. Ambedkar statue to Tahsildar office carrying coffins. Addressing the dharna, KVPS town secretary, Mudiverthi Baburao, said that dalits are facing untold hardship for want of burial ground in many villages in the district. The officials have either not provided adequate land or it got encroached making it difficult for dalits to bury their dead.
He said that dalits have no burial ground in as many as 148 villages in the district. Their burial grounds were either encroached upon or lacked access in 360 villages. In Ongole mandal, 10 villages do not have burial grounds for dalits. About 600 dalit families live in Karavadi village but there is no burial ground for them.
