TIRUPATI: To ensure rural penetration of the Internet, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and HCL Computers have joined hands to offer a personal computer with broadband connection in select SDCAs in Chittoor district.
While the Government of India gives a subsidy of Rs. 4,500 from the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), a rural BSNL subscriber has to make a down payment of Rs.2,250 and take home the computer by agreeing to pay the balance Rs.18,000 in sixty monthly instalments of Rs.300 added in the monthly bill. Apart from free delivery and installation, the customer not only enjoys warranty for the full five-year period, but also gets the modem for free.
S. Balachandran, General Manager of BSNL Tirupati Telecom District, announced on Wednesday that the scheme would be offered only in B. Kothakota, Bangarupalyam, Pakala, Pileru, Satyavedu, Sodum, Vayalpad and V. Kota SDCAs (STD Code areas). It was decided to provide only 30 connections per SDCA under the bundled offer.
C. Madhu Vijay, Territory Manager of HCL Computers, said that the bandwidth ranged from 512 kbps to 2 MB, while the monthly charges payable would be Rs.99 and Rs.150 for the usage limit of 400 MB and 1 GB respectively.
