Fire at gas dealer shop

Tirumala: The residents of Balaji Nagar at Tirumala were forced to face some anxious moments when a fire broke out in the vicinity of a private gas dealer's shop here on Tuesday. The residents who noticed the fire immediately alerted the officials. The fire department authorities swung into action and brought it under control. Girl ends life

DHARMAVARAM: Intermediate student E. Pushpalatha, 17, allegedly committed suicide by torching herself at her house in the town on Tuesday. According to the police, the girl's parents had decided to get her married and she was not interested as she wanted to study. She took to the extreme step when family members were away. Land identification

Sangareddy: The three member high-powered committee constituted by the State Government to identify land suitable to set up an IIT in the State will be visiting Medak district on March 11. According to a press release here, the committee will examine sites in Eddumailaram (Ordinance Factory), Lakdaram and Kandi.

One killed

Sangareddy: One person died instantaneously and another one injured when a DCM, in which they were travelling, rammed into a stationary truck on Rajiv Rahadari on Tuesday. Few workers sitting in the stationary truck loaded with asbestos sheets were also injured.

FCI officer arrested

HYDERABAD: The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested A. Ravindra, Area Manager, Food Corporation of India, Nizamabad, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000.

President's award for diver

VISAKHAPATNAM: Rabindra K. Sahoo, a clearance diver of Marine Commandos unit of Eastern Naval Command, has been selected for the President's Jeevan Raksha Padak for saving the lives of three women off Rishikonda Beach here in May-2005. Sahoo was participating in the National Hobby Cat Sailing competition when he saw a fishing boat with a group of tourists capsizing. The fishermen and a few other men onboard swam to safety. Three women onboard were shouting for help and Sahoo rescued them. Sahoo has also been selected for Sena Medal for his act of bravery displayed in an encounter with terrorists while his team was deployed in Kashmir Valley.

Maoist shot dead

Mahabubnagar: A Maoist was shot dead by police on Tuesday in the Nallamalla forest near Lingala village here. The police and a group of Maoists had exchanged fire. A .303 rifle and some kits bags were recovered from the site. The deceased was yet to be identified. Correspondent

Satyagraha plan

HYDERABAD: President of the Rayalaseema Rythu Sangham Seelam Sanjeeva Reddy will launch an indefinite hunger strike as part of a peaceful `satyagraha' here on March 1 in support of their demands, including separate Rayalaseema State. Demands include provision of irrigation and drinking water for Anantapur, supply of Krishna water to KC Canal ayacut, speedy completion of Veligonda project and checking irregularities in construction of irrigation projects.
