Bodies of boat accident victims yet to be fished out

MAHABUBNAGAR: Hours after a country-made boat capsized in river Krishna near Machalakatta, rescue teams were yet to fish out bodies of the victims till late in the night.

The annual Brahmotsvam at Laxmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Singotam in the district attracts huge crowds not only from Mahabubnagar but also from neighbouring Kurnool district.

As the overloaded boat sunk, some distance away from Manchalkatta, the fishermen rescued 14 passengers.

Four persons, who were rushed to the Kollapur Government Hospital were said to be in critical condition.

Three persons, Venkatramulu, Sreeramulu and Shanker said they started from Muchumarri village of Nandikotkur mandal to attend the jatara.

The Kollapur Circle Inspector Santosh Kiran rushed to the spot on hearing about the tragedy and began rescue work with the help of a mechanised boat.

Superintendent of Police Mahabubnagar K. Srinivas Reddy told The Hindu the ill-fated boat was older one and weak one and carrying over capacity.
