Help of Reliance to be sought

Kakinada: Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said plans were afoot for the development of Hope Island and Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary into world-class tourist spots for which Amalapuram MP G.V. Harsha Kumar got a project report prepared.

The Tourism Department would study the report, which included a perspective plan for the development of Pinjarikonda and Maredumilli areas and Konaseema, to take necessary action to transform them into preferred destinations.

Review meet

Addressing a review meeting on tourism, Mr. Dwivedi said the above areas had tremendous potential for development as tourist spots which are no less beautiful than those in Kerala and other States.

In addition to the efforts made by departments concerned, cooperation of the Reliance Industries would be sought in order to attract more tourists.

Mr. Harsha Kumar said he got a project report prepared for development of Hope Island at an estimated cost of Rs. 82 crores and a separate plan for sprucing up the Coringa sanctuary, where a 200-year-old lighthouse exists. Besides, the places where the Godavari branches off into canals are worthy of development as few such geographical wonders are located elsewhere in the State.

The MP listed out other places which have the potential to be developed into tourists spots and suggested that a database be maintained, comprising full details and pictures, to showcase them to outsiders.

Mr. Harsha Kumar said Reliance was planning to construct a tower resembling the world famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, at Yanam.

The RIL was also contributing its mite to for the development of the beach there. “There is no reason why similar projects could not be taken up at other places in the district,” he said.

ZP chairman Ch. Venugopala Krishna, MLAs Dommeti Venkateswarulu (Tallarevu) and P. Rajeswari Devi (Nagaram), District Forest Officer J.S.N. Murthy, DFO (Social Forestry) Jawahar Babu and others were present.
