HYDERABAD: State BJP president, B. Dattatreya has demanded cancellation of the Special Economic Zone for pharmaceutical industry at Jadcherla in Mahbubnagar and revert the land to the farmers, who have lost everything.
In a representation to the Union Commerce Minister, Kamalnath, he recalled that it was originally the Central Government that sanctioned the industrial growth centre at Jadcherla and allocated an amount of Rs. 30 crore in 2003.
The AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation acquired the land and Central Government released a grant of Rs. 6.45 crore during the years 2003-06.
Green industrial park
But instead of starting the growth centre, the State government decided to set up green industrial park. When there was no response to the park, the Government, converted the growth centre into pharma SEZ and allotted 250 acres to private pharmaceutical companies on lease basis in 2006. The Comptroller and Auditor General found fault with this decision and even suggested return of Rs. 6.45 crore to the Centre.
Another important issue was the livelihood of 260 poor SC / ST farmers whose lands were acquired paying them poor compensation of Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000 per acre, where as the market rate was Rs. 8 lakh to Rs. 10 a lakh acre. So far 20 farmers have either committed suicide or have died, hence it would be better to return the land to the farmers.
